Will become self-sufficient in edible oils
Shivraj said that the country’s total edible oil requirement in 2022-23 was 29.2 million tonnes, but we produce 12.7 billion tonnes from oil seeds. To meet the remaining demand one has to depend on foreign countries or imports. For this, National Edible Oil Mission Oilseeds has been created.
Farmers will get free seeds and will be given training
Shivraj said, the production of oil seeds plants currently running in the country is very less. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will produce seeds to provide to the farmers. These seeds will be made available to the farmers free of cost. For this, 600 clusters will be formed across the country. Wherever oil seeds are produced in 347 districts of 21 states across the country, those states have been specifically taken into consideration. Farmers will be given free seeds, training and information about how to do farming with new technology in these clusters. Such facilities will be provided under this mission.
Farming in 10 lakh hectare area every year
Union Minister Shivraj said that every year farming will be done in 10 lakh hectare area across the country. To overcome the shortage of improved seeds, 65 new seed centers will be created. 50 seed storage units will also be built to keep the seeds safe. He said that more attention is being paid to those states where only one Kharif crop is grown. Intercropping will also be used. These seeds and crops can be planted between different crops.
