70 people including 10 women killed in attack by Gran Griff gang in Haiti
Geneva. At least 70 people died in gang attack in Haiti. The dead also included 10 women and 3 children. The UN Human Rights Office expressed concern over the attacks in a statement published on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.
UN spokesman Thamin al-Khaitan said that members of the Gran Grief gang used automatic rifles to fire at people. Due to this, there were massive casualties and many residents were forced to flee.
At least 16 people have been seriously injured in the attack in the city of Pont Sonde in Haiti’s Artibonite department, including two gang members who were wounded during a shootout with Haitian police. Apart from shooting people, the gang members reportedly set fire to at least 45 houses and 34 vehicles, forcing many residents to flee their homes.
Rising incidents of violence and crime have raised concerns in the Caribbean country of Haiti, where armed gangs control much of the capital Port-au-Prince and are spreading into surrounding areas. This has increased hunger and unemployment. Hundreds of people have become homeless.
The United Nations Human Rights Office has called for increased international financial and military assistance to improve the security situation in Haiti. The office also stressed that Haitian authorities should thoroughly investigate the attack. Demanded action against those responsible for the attack.
