BSP Supremo Mayawati said, “Our party will refrain from contesting any by-elections for now. Fake votes are being manipulated through EVMs. The BSP will not participate in any by-election across the country until the Election Commission implements foolproof measures to prevent such fraud.”

New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday made a major announcement after the party’s crushing defeat in the by-elections. Mayawati said that the BSP will no longer participate in by-elections until the Election Commission takes concrete steps to prevent fake voting through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

“Our party will not contest any by-elections now,” Mayawati said. “Fake votes are being cast through EVMs. Until the Election Commission does not make complete arrangements to stop fake votes in by-elections, the BSP will not contest any by-election in the country.”

Mayawati raised concerns over fake voting and EVM

The former UP chief minister said that she has serious concerns over the integrity of India’s electoral process, citing instances of fake voting in recent elections, including the UP and Maharashtra assembly elections. She alleged that fake votes have been cast through both ballot papers and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), due to which the democratic process has been undermined.

She said that this issue is not limited to by-elections but is also prevalent in Lok Sabha and state assembly general elections. The BSP chief views this as a major threat to India’s democracy. In response to these concerns, Mayawati announced that the BSP will boycott all by-elections in the country until the Election Commission takes stringent measures to prevent fake voting.

BSP faces defeat in UP by-elections

The BSP faced a humiliating defeat in the UP by-elections and failed to secure a win in any of the nine contested seats. Despite fielding candidates in all districts, the party struggled, with several seats garnering just around 1,000 votes each. In total, BSP received only 1,32,929 votes across all nine seats. highlighting its marginalisation in the elections. Apart from that, the party could not even register a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
