Asthma is not a condition that can be treated just by diet and herbal remedies, as is a common myth, rather you need medications to suppress the inflammation in the respiratory tract.

New Delhi: Seasonal change brings along changes in humidity, temperature, and exposure to air pollutants. So this drift triggers asthmatic attacks in already exposed individuals by triggering an inflammatory response in them. Hence, to maintain good respiratory health, proper management of asthma is needed. With the current shift in seasons, Dr. Harish Bhatia, Founder Director of Rebreathe Clinic, Senior Consultant Chest Specialist & Physician with Apollo Hospital, shared tips for asthma patients.

  1. Stress management with mindfulness activities: Stress can trigger asthma in affected individuals and disrupt their quality of life. So those suffering from asthma should practice mindfulness activities that help to alleviate stress and relax the body such as breathing asanas, yoga, meditation, etc. Hence, mental health is quite crucial when it comes to the management of asthma and it needs to be addressed.
  2. A wholesome diet and regular physical activity: For dealing with asthma, consume a diet that is rich in antioxidants that boost the body’s immune defenses, and choose anti-inflammatory foods as the body’s inflammatory response can trigger asthma. The foods that fight inflammation include omega-3 fats such as fatty fish, walnuts, cashews, flaxseeds, etc. Avoid those foods that trigger asthmatic symptoms and rather opt for whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc. Low Vitamin D has also been linked with asthma triggers, so consume vitamin D-fortified foods or egg yolk or have at least 30 minutes of outdoor sitting. Exercise is quintessential for asthmatics due to the release of endorphins. But keep a few things in mind such as when there is seasonal drift, go for indoor activities such as indoor swimming or yoga. Walking is also an asthma-friendly exercise form.
  3. Maintenance of air quality indoors: When the air indoors is clean, it doesn’t trigger asthma and other allergic problems. For this, regularly use a vacuum cleaner in the house to remove potential allergens and the recent trend of using air purifiers indoors is also a great option. Choose one with a HEPA filter and maintain a reasonable air quality index (AQI) with minimum particulate matter (PM2.5).
  4. Consume prescribed medications: Asthma is not a condition that can be treated just by diet and herbal remedies, as is a common myth, rather you need medications to suppress the inflammation in the respiratory tract. Inhale the prescribed corticosteroids and long-acting bronchodilators. When you get an asthma attack, short-acting beta-agonists are needed to get quick relief such as albuterol. Strictly Following the medication schedule, even when you feel ok, prevents further attacks.
  5. Avoid your triggers: This work you have to do on your own to identify the triggers that lead to asthma attacks. Common triggers are pollen, dust mites, pet dander, smoke, air pollutants, etc. When the seasons are changing, keep your windows shut to avoid pollen entering your house and stay indoors during times of smog.

Conclusion

The stringent following of the above-mentioned strategies can help a lot in managing asthma during weather change and this in turn improves overall quality of life. For long-term management of asthma, go for proper treatment from a medical professional and religiously follow his advice.
