Accused of defrauding central government of crores arrested from Bengal

Jaigaon. The CGST team has arrested a pan masala businessman resident of Jaigaon, West Bengal on charges of defrauding the Central Government of crores of rupees. The name of the accused businessman is Ranjit Prasad. He is originally a resident of Jaigaon. It also has an office in Siliguri.

According to the information received, for some time now the accused had defrauded the Central Government of Rs 13 crore 64 lakh by falsifying documents. Sensing this, the CGST team started investigation and arrested Ranjit Prasad from his office in Siliguri on Friday.

The accused was produced in the Siliguri court on Friday, where the judge directed to keep the accused in judicial custody for five days.

It is noteworthy that the accused had defrauded the government in a similar manner earlier also in 2022. Along with this pan masala business, the accused was also illegally exporting cigarettes and gutkha to Bhutan.

When it was revealed that they were doing such illegal work while exporting to Bhutan, the Bhutan government was also searching for the accused but in the meantime the central government agency arrested him.
