There was a jump in India's coal production, increased by 7.2 percent to 90.62 MT in November.

New Delhi, December 1 (IANS). India’s total coal production increased by 7.2 per cent year-on-year to 90.62 million tonnes (MT) in November from 84.52 MT in the same period last year. This information was given by the Coal Ministry.

The statement issued by the ministry said that coal production by captive and other entities has increased by 37.69 percent year-on-year to 17.13 MT in November 2024, which was 12.44 MT in the same period last year.

Coal production from the beginning of the financial year 2024-25 till November 2024 has been 628.03 MT, which was 591.32 MT in the same period last year. There has been an increase of 6.21 percent on annual basis.

There has been a steady improvement in coal dispatch (coal sent to power plants) in November 2024, which has increased from 82.07 MT in November 2023 to 85.22 MT, showing an increase of 3.85 percent. Dispatch from captive and other entities saw a sharp increase from 13.19 MT in November 2023 to 16.58 MT in November 2024, showing a YoY growth of 25.73 per cent.

The statement further said that coal dispatch from the beginning of FY 2024-25 till November 2024 increased to 657.75 MT, compared to 623.78 MT during the same period of the last financial year, registering an increase of 5.45 per cent.

The Ministry successfully auctioned 9 mines this week as part of the 10th round of commercial coal mine auction. The ministry said these mines are expected to generate annual revenue of about Rs 1,446 crore (except partially discovered mines). It is likely to attract capital investment of about Rs 2,115 crore and create 19,063 employment opportunities.

The nine mines have combined geological reserves of approximately 3,998.73 million tonnes. According to the official statement, the cumulative peak rated capacity (PRC) of these mines, excluding partially discovered coal mines, is 14.10 MTPA. Of these, three coal mines are in Jharkhand, while Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have two mines each.

The Coal Ministry had launched the 10th round of coal mine auction for commercial mining on June 21, 2024. A total of nine coal mines were successfully auctioned in the advance auctions, including three fully explored and six partially explored coal mines.
