The first visit of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to Wayanad in Kerala after an impressive electoral debut by winning from the Lok Sabha constituency was marked with the participation of a large number of women.

Priyanka Gandhi’s voice echoed through the valleys of the picturesque hills of Wayanad, on Sunday, 1 December, during her two-day visit to Kerala.

The newly elected MP, who secured a historic victory in the Wayanad constituency with a majority of 4.10 lakh votes — surpassing her brother Rahul Gandhi’s margin — addressed her supporters in public meetings held across the region.

All her speeches, delivered in Mananthavady at 10.30 am, Sulthan Bathery at 12.15 pm, and Kalpetta at 1.30 pm, began with a simple, heartfelt phrase — “just to say thank you” quickly shifted to a tone of political assertion, emphasising her vision for the constituency and the broader political landscape.

The Wayanad constituency, spanning seven Assembly segments across multiple districts, now has a new leader determined to make her mark.

Vows to protect the spirit of India

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sharply criticised the BJP-led Union government, asserting that the current battle of the Congress-led INDIA bloc was against the forces stripping away people’s rights and consolidating power in the hands of a few wealthy businessmen.

Speaking at a public meeting in Mananthavady, she declared, “We are fighting for the spirit of our nation, the soul of India.”

On the second day of her visit to Wayanad, Priyanka emphasised that this struggle was against a force determined to dismantle the very institutions that have shaped India’s democracy.

On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi also commented on Gautam Adani’s indictment in the US.

“The Constitution ensures equality for all citizens. However, Prime Minister Modi suggests that Adani will be treated differently from other Indians. Despite Adani being labelled a criminal in the US, Modi claims that it doesn’t matter, and in India, no such title will be given to him,” he had said.

She assured the people of Wayanad that she would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them in their fight for their rightful needs and aspirations.

‘BJP disregarding democratic norms’

Priyanka Gandhi claimed that the ruling BJP had been disregarding democratic norms in the country.

“You don’t have any rules or explanations. The BJP’s behaviour completely disregards democratic norms. Institutions are being destroyed, and even our fundamental faith in the electoral process and the institutions that once held our country together is now shaken.

This struggle is for the core values of our Constitution,” she said during her address at a meeting in Mukkam, located in the Kozhikode district, within the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.

Referring to the survivors of the Wayanad landslide, which claimed around 300 lives four months ago, Priyanka added, “You all showed immense courage and resilience. The same courage you offered to my brother, you gave me as well. I am here to understand your issues and learn about the challenges you face.”

Women’s empowerment amid political criticism

Priyanka Gandhi’s public meetings in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency were marked by an overwhelming display of women’s participation, sending a powerful message that challenged traditional political dynamics.

The presence of women at these gatherings was striking, not just as supporters but as active participants, a clear challenge to the male-dominated political narrative.

Priyanka’s speeches were a strong emotional connection to Wayanad, where she addressed the local concerns with a personal touch.

Unapologetic about her political stance, Priyanka declared her commitment to being a constant presence in the constituency, a direct response to the criticism faced by Rahul Gandhi for his infrequent visits.

“You will see me here, I will always be here,” she stated, positioning herself as a dedicated and hands-on leader in contrast to her brother’s critics.

IUML expresses dissatisfaction

Meanwhile, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) expressed dissatisfaction over being sidelined during Priyanka Gandhi’s recent visit to Wayanad.

The party has raised concerns over the lack of coordination, which had been a hallmark of the unity seen during the election campaign.

It reportedly felt ignored after the Congress did not extend an invitation to Pannakad Abbasali, Chairman of the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency election campaign committee and the party’s Malappuram district president, for the rallies.

IUML’s leadership in Wayanad also reported a communication breakdown regarding Priyanka Gandhi’s visit, which led to their absence at key events.

Notably, prominent IUML leaders PV Abdul Wahab MP and ET Muhammed Basheer who were expected to attend the event at Karulayi were absent, citing the short notice of the invitation as the reason for their disappointment.

Meanwhile, PK Basheer MLA took charge of organising the reception of Priyanka Gandhi at Edavanna. IUML’s Eranadu Constituency President PP Safarulla and other local leaders were present at the venue.

Since leaders such as Pannakad Sadikhali Shihab Thangal and PK Kunhalikutty remain abroad, the Muslim League is considering addressing these issues with Congress leadership, seeking a resolution to the lack of communication and coordination, after their return.
