A 30-year-old man from Haryana, Rahul Jat, was arrested for the rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl in Udvada, Gujarat. The investigation revealed links to at least four other murders across India. Jat’s modus operandi involved targeting lone female travelers, often looting, assaulting, and murdering them. His criminal history includes arrests for theft and arms smuggling.

Udvada: A 30-year-old man from Haryana, accused of being a serial killer, was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl in Udvada, Gujarat, on November 14.

The man, identified as Rahul alias Bholu Karmvir Ishwar Jat, allegedly committed the crime in a mango orchard, where he raped and strangled the girl before calmly eating a fruit salad. After the murder, he walked 8 kilometers to Pardi railway station and boarded a train to Vadodara, continuing his journey while police were unaware of his whereabouts.

Accused linked to four murders

Valsad police intensified their investigation following Jat’s arrest, which revealed that he was linked to at least four other murders committed across different states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

Police believe Jat’s modus operandi involved targeting women traveling alone, particularly in coaches meant for differently-abled passengers. He would often loot and sexually assault his victims before murdering them, making him difficult to catch due to his constant movement and tendency to sleep at railway platforms and on trains.

After committing the crime in Udvada, Jat reportedly returned to the murder site, possibly to retrieve his belongings. The police conducted a reconstruction of the crime, where Jat’s attempts to mislead investigators became apparent. They found that after the murder, he hid in nearby bushes and waited for the victim’s family to leave with the body before emerging and walking to the railway station, as reported by Times Of India.

Investigators also suspect that he may have continued his travels to South India, where he is believed to have committed two additional murders.

Criminal history of accused

Rahul Jat’s criminal history includes multiple arrests for truck theft and illegal arms smuggling in Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. He has been imprisoned previously in 2018-19 and again in 2024. The police are now working with law enforcement agencies in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana to piece together details of other potential crimes committed by Jat.

Jat’s arrest was the result of a special investigation team (SIT) formed by the Valsad police, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) AK Varma.
