Bengaluru: A senior Bengaluru police officer has been accused of driving 33-year-old businesswoman and lawyer S Jeeva to die by suicide. Deputy Superintendent of Police Kanakalakshmi is facing allegations of stripping Jeeva, demanding a bribe of Rs 25 lakh and publicly humiliating her. After a complaint from Jeeva’s sister, S Sangeeta, a case has been registered against the officer, and an investigation is underway.
Jeeva, who operated a wood material shop in Bengaluru, was found dead at her residence last Friday (November 22). In an 11-page note, she detailed the harassment she faced at the hands of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) officer, NDTV reported.
Jeeva linked to Bhovi scam, CID orders appearance
Jeeva was implicated in the Karnataka Bhovi Development Corporation scam, which involved alleged misuse of funds intended for loans to members of the Bhovi community under a job scheme. The CID had been tasked with investigating the case. Although the Karnataka High Court had permitted the CID to question Jeeva via video conferencing between November 14 and 23, she was instructed to appear in person.
Jeeva complied and visited the CID office on November 14. Her note claims she was subjected to degrading treatment, including being stripped and interrogated about carrying cyanide. She further alleged that the officer rejected her submitted documents and demanded a Rs 25 lakh bribe.
Harassment at shop, police probe officer’s role
The harassment reportedly escalated, with the officer visiting Jeeva’s shop and insulting her in front of her employees. The series of events allegedly ended in Jeeva taking her life. The police are now probing the allegations against Deputy Superintendent Kanakalakshmi.
