BSF Raising Day 2024: When and why is this day observed?

The Border Security Force (BSF) is one of India’s five Central Armed Police Forces. Every year, on December 1, BSF Raising Day is celebrated, marking the force’s beginning in 1965. The BSF was created after the 1965 India-Pakistan war to secure India’s borders. The dedicated men and women of the BSF guard our borders, prevent smuggling, educate border communities, and control crimes that cross the border.

BSF Raising Day came about because of the India-Pakistan war, with the main goal of protecting our borders. In January, Pakistan acted aggressively near Kanjarkot in Gujarat. To respond, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri formed a single force to secure the international borders. Khusro Faramurz Rustamji recruited personnel from the Air Force, Navy, Police, and Army to create the BSF. He started on July 21 and became the head of the BSF.

To find qualified officers for the BSF, a team went to rural areas to recruit young people, adding 12 new battalions.

In 1966, 15 companies from Jammu and Kashmir were combined with the BSF. KF Rustamji, who had come from the Indian Police Service, was the first Director-General of the BSF.

BSF Raising Day honours the brave officers who work hard to keep our country safe.

BSF: Role and Responsibilities

The Border Security Force (BSF) protects India’s borders to protect the country from outside threats.

The BSF guards the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, working in different areas, such as the tough desert in Rajasthan and the thick forests in the Northeast.

In addition to border security, the BSF also fights against insurgency, smuggling, and other crimes that cross the border.

BSF members are trained to deal with many challenges, including infiltration, terrorism, and natural disasters. Their ability to adapt to different situations makes them a key part of India’s defence system.

Over time, the BSF has also taken part in United Nations peacekeeping missions, showing its dedication to global peace and security.
