Dar es Salaam, November 27 (IANS). The death toll from a building collapse in the Kariakoo suburb of Dar es Salaam has risen to 29.

A senior government official gave information regarding the number of deaths.

Tanzanian government chief spokesman Thobias Makoba also announced the suspension of a 10-day rescue operation following the tragic accident that rescued more than 85 people trapped under the debris of the building.

Nine more bodies have been recovered since President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the final count of 20 bodies on Wednesday last week, Xinhua news agency reported.

Hassan shared information about the 20 dead after visiting the site of the collapsed building soon after returning from the G20 summit in Brazil. This four-storey building housed shops and other businesses. It collapsed on 16 November.

It is also known as the commercial capital of Tanzania. Initially 13 people were reported dead. The government had said that rescue operations would continue until all the people trapped inside the building were rescued. However, now this has been banned.

The number of people trapped was not clear. Many people told local media that they had lost contact with their relatives.

There were dozens of shops in a four-storey building in Dar-es-Salaam.
