CBI’s big action on illegal SIM card selling, link related to digital arrest

Taking major action, the CBI has taken those who sell illegal SIM cards into custody. The CBI has arrested 5 people on charges of selling illegal SIM cards while running a search operation at 42 places in 8 states of the country. These SIM cards were used for various types of financial scams including digital arrests.

Used for digital arrest scam

The CBI has taken this action by running Operation Chakra V against the Point-Off-SAL (POS) agents selling SIM cards of Telecom Service Providers in the state of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. According to the report, cyber criminals used to issue SIM cards through these agents. Those SIM cards were used for digital arrest scams, fake publicity, investment fraud and UPI fraud.

During the search operation, the CBI collected a number of evidence including a copy of a large amount of mobile phones, electronics devices, KYC documents. According to the agency, 5 criminals from four states have been arrested in this action.

Many cases of digital arrest came up

There have been many cases of digital arrest in India in the last few months, due to which a fraud of Rs 3.14 crore has been done from a retired bank officer of Noida adjacent to Delhi. According to Noida police, cyber criminals kept the Noida couple in digital arrest for 15 days. Apart from this, another digital arrest incident was in the news, in which the school teacher from Agra died of shock.

New rules of bulk sim card

The Department of Telecommunications has made major changes in the SIM card rules to prevent frauds through fake SIM cards. According to the new rules, only 100 SIM cards will be issued to any private company in bulk. For more than 100 SIM cards, the managing director of the company will have to issue a request in writing. Also, e-verification has been made mandatory for every SIM card. Not only this, in bulk, a provision for changes in the rules for the POS selling SIM cards has also been made.
