CEA recognizes indigenously developed SHKT technology for hydro category
-CEA expressed its commitment to promote renewable energy innovations
New Delhi, 26 November (HS). Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has recognized the indigenously developed surface hydrokinetic turbine technology of Hydro category. It aims to achieve the goals of net zero carbon emissions, ensure sustainable growth in the country’s power sector and promote innovations.
The power ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the Central Electricity Authority has approved the development of hydro power plants to achieve the targets of net zero carbon emissions, promote innovations and explore alternative technologies to ensure sustainable growth in the country’s power sector. Under this, Surface Hydrokinetic Turbine (SHKT) technology has been given its recognition.
According to the ministry, SHKT utilizes the kinetic energy of flowing water with practically zero drag head to produce electrical energy, whereas conventional units use suitable civil structures like dams, diversion weirs and barrages to generate the required ‘head’. Utilizes the potential energy of water through construction. This technology is a solution that can help the power sector meet the growing demand for base-load, round-the-clock renewable energy. Especially in areas where grid penetration is less. Surface hydrokinetic turbines are easy to install and cost effective, with production costs ranging from Rs 2-3 per unit. This technology brings benefits to both buyers and producers of renewable energy.
The Ministry of Power said that the adoption of SHKT technology will prove to be an important milestone in harnessing India’s extensive water infrastructure of canals, hydroelectric tailrace channels for sustainable energy generation. This technology has immense potential at gigawatt scale, with lots of opportunities to benefit from renewable energy, which will lead to overall development of the power sector.
