New Delhi: In a significant move, the Central government on Wednesday branded the Muslim League Jammu and Kashmir (MLJK-MA), led by the incarcerated separatist figure Masarat Alam Bhat, as an “unlawful association,” imposing a five-year ban under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

MLJK-MA engaged in activities deemed unlawful

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, announcing the government’s order, stated that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration clearly signalled that those acting against the unity, sovereignty and integrity of the nation would face the wrath of the law.

“The Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) is declared as an ‘Unlawful Association’ under UAPA. This organisation and its members are involved in anti-national and secessionist activities in J&K, supporting terrorist activities and inciting people to establish Islamic rule in J&K,” Shah wrote in a post on ‘X’.

In the order issued by the Home Ministry, it is made clear that MLJK-MA and its members, specifically its Chairman Masarat Alam Bhat, have consistently engaged in activities deemed unlawful, posing a threat to the nation’s integrity, sovereignty, security and communal harmony of the country.

“Anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda”

The declaration outlines the organisation’s involvement in fostering secessionist endeavours, supporting terrorist activities and fomenting sentiments aimed at establishing Islamic rule in Jammu and Kashmir, signifying a flagrant disregard for constitutional authority and national sovereignty. The order highlights the group’s “anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda”, underscoring a dedicated pursuit of “freedom for Jammu and Kashmir from India”, to amalgamate the region with Pakistan and establish Islamic governance.

Central government declared MLJK-MA “unlawful association”

Furthermore, the Home Ministry underscored the MLJK-MA’s conspiracy in “anti-national” and “secessionist activities,” particularly within Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting their suspected contribution to supporting terrorist tendencies within the region. Citing the powers vested in sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, the Central government declared the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) as an unlawful association, indicating a strong measure in its efforts to curtail activities deemed detrimental to the nation’s well-being and security.
