Chandigarh blast: Crude bombs were thrown outside two nightclubs in Chandigarh’s Sector-26 with the police suspecting an extortion as the motive behind the explosions.

Chandigarh: A security alert has been sounded in Chandigarh after explosives were hurled at two nightclubs in Sector 26 including one owned by rapper-singer Badshah in the wee hours of Tuesday, police said.

Explosions were heard at the Seville Bar & Lounge and De’Orra – Alehouse & Kitchen in the posh Sector-26 locality at around 4 am. The explosives were hurled by two unidentified bike-borne assailants.

Police and forensic teams have arrived at the spot and further investigation is underway. No casualties have been reported in the blasts, however, the establishments suffered damages, police said.

According to sources, the preliminary probe has revealed the explosions were caused by crude bombs made from potash, a substance used in country-made crackers, and some jute ropes have also been found.

Motive behind blasts

At the time of the explosions, the nightclubs were closed, leading the police to believe that the blasts were carried out solely to spread fear. Initial investigations suggest the possibility of an extortion angle, with the intent to intimidate nightclub owners.
