Chennai submerged due to Fengal storm, 3 people died, airport opened after 16 hours

Chennai. Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry on Saturday evening. With this came heavy rain and strong winds. Many parts of Chennai were submerged due to torrential rains. Three people have died.

Chennai airport remained closed for 16 hours due to the cyclone. It opened at 4 am on Sunday morning. It has been raining continuously in Chennai, its surrounding districts and Puducherry since Saturday. Due to this, public transport including bus, train and flight services has been affected. People have been evacuated from flood affected areas to safe places. According to the Meteorological Department, the cyclone remained stable on the coasts of Northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It is expected to weaken and turn into a deep depression.

Due to heavy rains, two runways and one taxiway of Chennai Airport were submerged. Chennai airport was closed on Saturday. A huge crowd of people gathered at the airport. 55 flights have been canceled and 19 have been diverted. Both domestic and international flights have been affected. Hospitals and houses were submerged in water in Chennai and its surrounding areas. Three people died due to lightning in separate rain-related incidents in the city. Greater Chennai Corporation distributed food to about 2.32 lakh people. About 200 people from low-lying areas have been kept in 8 relief camps.

Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin reviewed the relief and rescue operations. MK Stalin held a meeting with district collectors and top civic officials of the northern districts to assess the ground situation. He spoke to people living in a relief camp in Chengalpet district. Udhayanidhi Stalin said that 6 subways are flooded. It is being removed. 1,700 motor pumps are being used to clear waterlogging on war footing at 334 locations. There is no news of any major damage in Puducherry. The administration had sent 12 lakh people to safe places and asked Fengal to remain alert.
