Science News Desk – Excessive groundwater extraction has tilted the Earth’s axis by 31.5 inches over the past two decades. According to a new study, this redistribution of water has caused sea levels to rise globally by about 0.24 inches. The research, published in Geophysical Research Letters, shows that groundwater extraction plays a key role in shifting the Earth’s rotation pole. The research, led by geophysicist Ki-wion Seomat of Seoul National University, shows that among climate-related factors, groundwater redistribution has the greatest impact on the tilt of the Earth’s rotation pole. According to the study, from 1993 to 2010 , approximately 2,150 gigatons of groundwater were extracted. This caused a major change in the tilt of the planet. Much of this water eventually ran back into the ocean, causing sea levels to rise. According to SEOMAT, studying changes in the Earth’s rotation pole provides information about changes in large-scale water storage.

What is groundwater?
Groundwater is water stored beneath the Earth’s surface. It is trapped between soil, sand and rocks. This water comes from rain and other celestial events and seeps into the earth. Unlike rivers, lakes or springs, groundwater is not directly visible to us, it is like the Earth’s invisible water reserves. We use this groundwater for everything from drinking water to farming and factories.

Why is Earth’s axial tilt important?
According to NASA, it is due to this inclination of the Earth that there are seasons on the Earth. This tilt was caused by a massive ancient collision with Theia, a Mars-sized object. This cosmic collision permanently tilted the Earth on its axis, creating a cycle of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. According to the study, the recent tilt will not change the weather, but it could affect global climate patterns.
