Kangana Ranaut is all set to bring the epic saga of India’s most powerful woman to the big screen with her upcoming film Emergency. In the much-awaited biographical political drama film, the actor-politician will be seen playing the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

New Delhi: Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut on Monday (November 18, 2024) took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce the new release date of Emergency. After multiple delays, the biographical political drama is now scheduled to hit the silver screen on January 17, 2025.
A few weeks ago, the 38-year-old star was quoted as saying that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had granted the censor certificate to the team after the film missed its earlier release date of September 6, 2024. You will be amazed to know that Kangana has written, directed and Emergency as well.

Emergency controversy
For the unversed, Emergency sparked controversy when Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, alleged that the film misrepresented the Sikh community and distorted facts. On the sidelines, Kangana raised serious allegations against the CBFC, accusing it of delaying the certification process.

In this highly anticipated film, Kangana portrays former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. It also features Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Ashok Chhabra as Morarji Desai, Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi, Richard Klein as Henry Kissinger, Scott Alexander Young as Richard Nixon, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.
Emergency plot
The storyline of the flick revolves around the dark chapter of post-independence Indian history when Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency, from 1975 to 1977, for a 21-month period. Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the movie is reportedly based on a screenplay written by Ritesh Shah.
