New Delhi: When we hear “Kale Khan”, the first thing that comes to our mind is the bus stand in Delhi. The central government renamed Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Chowk Birsa Munda Chowk. Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar renamed the Sarai Kale Khan intersection “Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chowk” on the occasion of Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary.

Who was Kale Khan?
Before we proceed, let us learn about the meaning of Sarai. Sarai was the name given to places where people used to stop and rest. It is known that when people from other areas came to Delhi, they stopped here and then resumed their journey.

Delhi has three monuments named Kale Khan, each linked to different people from various centuries.
Sarai Kale Khan: Now a busy bus stand. Kale Khan was a Sufi saint during Sher Shah Suri’s time. His dargah is at Delhi Airport, Terminal 2. The builder of this Sarai followed the saint and named it after him.
Kale Khan ka Gumbad: This tomb is in the South Extension. It belongs to Mubarak Khan Lohani, the father of Darya Khan Lohani, who was the chief justice during Bahlol Lodhi’s reign. The reason why this tomb is called Kale Khan is unclear.
Haveli Kale Khan: Located in Mehrauli, this haveli belonged to Bahadur Shah Zafar’s spiritual adviser. Kale Sahib was a respected man with many followers, including the famous poet Ghalib. He also had a haveli in Ballimaran, and a nearby area called Ahata Kale Sahib still exists. Only the gateway of the Mehrauli haveli remains and it is in ruins.
