New Delhi: Melissa Curtis, a 32-year-old former teacher in the US state of Maryland, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, with all but 12 months suspended, for sexually abusing a teenage student multiple times. Curtis will also serve five years of supervised probation upon release and register as a sex offender for 25 years, Fox 5 DC reported.
The abuse occurred between January and May 2015 in Montgomery County, with Curtis providing the eighth-grader with alcohol and marijuana before engaging in sexual intercourse over 20 times. Curtis had been a teacher for about two years and taught at Lakelands Park Middle School.
Curtis turned herself in to police on November 7, 202, and then she was charged with sexual abuse of a minor and multiple counts of third- and fourth-degree sexual offenses. The investigation began in October 2023 after the victim came forward with the abuse allegations. As part of her probation, Curtis is banned from having unsupervised contact with minors, except for her own children. She pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offenses on June 20.
Former teacher charged with sexually exploiting students
In another shocking incident, Carissa Jane Smith, 30, a former substitute teacher from Missouri, faces multiple charges for allegedly offering students money, alcohol and marijuana for sex. Smith, from Dixon, allegedly paid students USD 100 for sexual acts and bribed them to keep it secret.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office reports incidents occurred at her home, roadsides and a gravel road between August 2023 and September 2024. Dixon Middle School hired Smith as a long-term substitute in September 2022. Smith is accused of engaging in sexual acts with students during her employment. She faces serious charges for exploiting her position of authority.
