Gaziabad ponds will be renovated to increase ground water level

To increase the groundwater of Uttar Pradesh News Desk district, all the ponds will be renovated under Jal Shakti Mission. The ponds will be renovated by companies using groundwater.

It is estimated that agreements will be signed between the village heads and the companies by December, after which the companies will start the work of renovating the ponds in the village. On one hand, the renovation of the ponds will beautify the ponds, while on the other hand, rain water harvesting in the pond will increase the ground water in the surrounding areas. In fact, many companies in the district have been given NOC by the district administration to use groundwater.

According to the terms of NOC, the amount of water that is extracted from the ground has to be stored. Companies are being given the responsibility of renovating ponds just to conserve water. After the companies renovate the ponds, the village heads will maintain the ponds.

The condition of most of the ponds is pitiful: The condition of the ponds which have not been renovated by the district has reached a pitiful condition. The water in many ponds has completely dried up, while in many others there is a pile of filth. Some ponds have also been encroached upon by people. Actually, the ponds were constructed to increase the groundwater level, but with the passage of time and lack of maintenance, the ponds turned into heaps of filth.

Due to increasing population in the district the groundwater level is falling rapidly. Jal Nigam does not provide water in all the areas, hence people are supplying water by getting borewells constructed. The water level in the urban areas of the district has gone up to five hundred feet. In some areas there is no water even at 700 feet. The groundwater level is falling rapidly even in the rural areas of the district. The rapidly falling groundwater level in the district has increased the concern of the administration as well as the people.

Agreements are being made between companies and village heads for the renovation of ponds. The ponds of the district will be renovated under Jal Shakti Mission. In the past, 228 ponds have been renovated. – Abhinav Gopal, Chief Development Officer
