The Modi government announced 25 percent increase in the wages of spinners and 7 percent increase in the wages of weavers from October 2, 2024.
KVIC hikes wages of spinners and weavers
New Delhi: On the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), under the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), announced 25 percent hike in the wages of spinners and 7 percent increase in the wages of weavers with effect from October 2, 2024.
“Keeping with the vision of revered Bapu, patriotism and welfare of artisans is the priority of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji,” KVIC chairman Manoj Kumar said.
KVIC Chairman announced the wage hike for Khadi artisans and launched special discounts on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
Wages of spinners and weavers increased
The government informed that the spinners who spin yarn on the charkha will be eligible for a 25 per cent increase in their wages, while weavers working on the loom will be given a 7 per cent hike. A special discount of 20 per cent on Khadi products and 10 per cent on Village Industries products has been launched at the flagship Khadi Bhavan in Connaught Place, New Delhi, as well as across the country, the ministry informed.
To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Union Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister JP Nadda, Union MSME Minister Shri Jitan Ram Manjhi, Minister of State for MSME and Labour & Employment Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, and KVIC chairman Manoj Kumar officially launching the special discount campaign by shopping at the Khadi Bhavan on Baba Kharak Singh Marg.
After buying a Khadi kurta and Village Industries products, Nadda appealed to citizens to buy Khadi products.
The KVIC chairman stated that spinners who used to earn Rs 10 per hank would now be eligble to receive Rs 12.50. The wages of spinners and weavers was last hiked on April 1, 2023. At that time the wages were increased from Rs 7.50 to Rs 10 per hank.
Kumar praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking steps to transform the lives of spinners and weavers through the ‘Khadi Revolution.’ He said that the Khadi sector’s business surpassed Rs 1.55 lakh crore in 2023-24.
The sales figures of Khadi products on Gandhi Jayanti in the last three years reflect that PM Modi’s call for ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Made in India’ have yielded positive results. In 2021-22, products worth Rs 1.01 crore were sold, in 2022-23 it was Rs 1.34 crore, and Rs 1.52 crore in 2023-24.
