GST Day: GST focus will be made on making business easier, Finance Ministry released data
The focus of Goods and Services Tax (GST) will now be on making business easier, ensuring strong compliance and promoting comprehensive economic inclusion. The Finance Ministry said this on Tuesday on the occasion of GST Day. GST has completed eight years on 1 July 2025. According to PTI news, the GST implemented from July 1, 2017 has integrated 17 tax and 13 surcharge. This has created a uninterrupted national market by making compliance easier and making tax systems digital.
Gross GST collection at record level
According to the news, the Finance Ministry released the ‘8 -year report card of GST’ said that GST is entering its 9th year. It is strengthening its role as the driver of India’s economic progress. According to the data, the gross GST collection was Rs 7.40 lakh crore in the first year (9 months) of the operation. It has seen rapid growth in the last few years. The gross GST collection record reached Rs 22.08 lakh crore in the financial year 2024-25, showing a growth of 9.4 percent year-on-year.
How much GST revenue increased?
The annual GST revenue increased to almost three times, which increased from Rs 7 lakh crore in FY 2017-18 to Rs 22 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. The increase in persistent double digits not only indicates a strong economy, but also indicates a mature, technique-operated tax ecosystem marked by better compliance, low leakage and low taxpayer burden. Growing collections reflect better enforcement and input tax credit (ITC) control.
More than 162 crore GST returns filed by May 2025
The ministry said that India’s GST collection reached the top level of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April 2025. Statistics have stated that more than 162 crore GST returns have been filed by May 2025, which reflects scale, adoption and growing confidence in a streamlined, digital-first tax system in just 8 years. GST integrated indirect taxes in a simplified system with standardized slabs (0 percent, 5 percent, 12 percent, 18 percent and 28 percent) and uninterrupted registration, a centralized digital platform (GSTN) for seamless registration, filing and payment, making compliance cost cut and easy to trade.
The ministry said that even after eight years of launching in 2017, GST remains the cornerstone of India’s economic reforms. By promoting a common national market, GST has increased efficiency, reduced business costs and increased transparency in taxation.
