Kuldhara village, located 14 km from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, which has been deserted for the last 200 years, is a haunted place. It is believed that this village was settled on the banks of river Saraswati by the Paliwal Brahmin community in the year 1300.

There was a time when there was a lot of activity in this village. But today the situation is such that no one is afraid to wander here and this place has not been rehabilitated for 200 years. Let us tell you some interesting things about this village.

Kuldhara village was originally settled by Brahmins who migrated to Jaisalmer from Pali area and settled in Kuldhara village. The books and literary records of this village state that Kadhan, a Brahmin of Pali, first built his house at this place and also dug a pond, which he named Udhansar. Pali Brahmins were called Paliwal.

According to popular myth, in the 1800s, there used to be a jagir or kingdom under the village minister Salim Singh, who defrauded the people by collecting taxes. The people here were very troubled due to the taxes imposed on the villagers. It is said that Salim Singh took a liking to the daughter of the village head and threatened the villagers that if they tried to protest or come to the streets, he would start collecting more taxes. To save the lives of their villagers as well as to save the honor of their daughter, the entire village including the chief ran away overnight. The villagers left the village deserted and went elsewhere. It is said that while leaving, the villagers had cursed the village that no one would be able to live here in the coming days.

Kuldhara village is now a historical site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Tourists can walk here and see glimpses of what happened during that time. Kuldhara region is spread over a vast area, consisting of about 85 small settlements. All the huts in the villages are dilapidated and in ruins. There is also a Devi temple here, which is now in ruins. There are inscriptions inside the temple that have helped archaeologists gather information about the village and its ancient inhabitants.

You can visit the village daily from 8 am to 6 pm. Since this place is considered haunted, the local people close its gate after sunset. If you are going by car then the entry fee to Kuldhara village is Rs 10 per person and if you are going by car then the fee is Rs 50.
