Karnataka: Siddaramaiah government’s big announcement, changed university and name of two cities
CM Siddaramaiah’s big announcement
The Karnataka cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to change the name of Bangalore City University to Dr. Manmohan Singh City University. It is the first university in the country named after the former Prime Minister. The step has been taken after the announcement made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in his budget speech on March 7, 2025, in which he said that the name of the university will be changed in honor of Manmohan Singh’s contribution for India. In addition to changing the name of the university, the state government has named Bangalore Rural district as North Bengaluru District and has renamed Bage Palli Town as Bhagyanagar.
Why is Bangalore City University special
Bangalore City University is a government institution earlier known as Bangalore Central University. The university was established in 2017 and changed its name in 2020. Now its name has been changed under the Congress -led government. Under this initiative, Government Arts College and Government RC College will be brought under the university as constituent colleges.
DK Shivkumar announced this announcement
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar had already announced a plan to establish a research and study center at Bangalore University dedicated to Dr. Manmohan Singh’s work. Speaking in Belagavi, Shivkumar had said, “Luck is not in our hands, but I am proud to say that even though Manmohan Singh is no longer there, but he is still alive through his contribution to the nation. His legacy cannot be changed. At Bangalore University, we are going to start a research and study center for all students so that they can know about the development of the country.”
