New Delhi: The Khelo India Youth Games 2024 will be held in four cities- Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy and will begin on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will declare these games open at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
The Indian government began this initiative as it helps to promote sport at the beginner’s level in India. The matches will be live-streamed and live-telecasted in India.
The sixth season of the multi-sport tournament will go on till January 31.
The tournament will function like a team championship, where the medal won by each individual will add to the overall medal tally of their respective state. Once the tournament ends, whichever state has the maximum number of gold medals will become the winner of the tournament.
5500 athletes from 36 states and UTs will be competing for 933 medals- which includes 278 gold and as many silver and 377 bronze in 26 different tournaments at KIYG 2024.
Squash will be making its debut this time and silambam, an indigenous martial art, will be held as a demonstrative sport.
On one hand, Chennai will hold a lot of tournaments but the Gutka and Kho Kho tournaments will be held in Trichy whereas Mallakhamb and Kalaripayattu will be held in Madurai. Basketball and Thagta will be held in Madurai and Coimbatore.
This time, Tamil Nadu will send the largest contingent as 559 athletes will be participating whereas Maharashtra will send a 415-member-strong contingent playing in 24 sports disciplines whereas Haryana will send 491 athletes this time.
