Lathi charge on farmers amid wheat procurement crisis in Pakistan's Punjab province, 200 arrested

Lahore, 30 April (Hindus). Punjab Police in Pakistan on Monday lathicharged protesting farmers and arrested more than 200 farmers in Lahore amid the wheat procurement crisis.

After bumper wheat production in Punjab province, farmers are complaining that the Maryam Nawaz government of the province is not purchasing wheat and flour mills are offering rates lower than the support price set by the government for their crops.

'Kisan Ittehad' spokesperson Mian Umer said, on Monday, when a large number of farmers were going towards the Punjab Assembly in Lahore to stage a protest, police personnel attacked them at GPO Chowk, Mall Road and killed more than 200 people. More farmers were arrested. He said that the police also resorted to lathi charge to disperse them in Lahore. Farmers Board Punjab (KBP) Chairman Mian Abd-ur-Rashid is also among the arrested farmers.

At the same time, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari said that a political party (Imran's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) is doing politics on the issue of farmers. He said, we will not allow anyone to do politics on this issue and will not protect the interests of farmers.
