In order to liberate his subjects from this suffering, King Mandhata decided to do severe penance. They set out towards the forest to find a solution to their problem. While walking, he eventually reached the ashram of Angira Rishi, the supreme son of Brahmaputra.
The king bowed to Angira Rishi and told him his problem. He said, “O Maharishi! I have never hurt my subjects, always ruled religion. Still why there is such a severe famine in my kingdom? Please tell me the solution to this problem, so that the sufferings of my subjects will be overcome.”
Angira Rishi listened to the king carefully and knew everything from his divine point of view. He told the king, “O Rajan! It is true that you are a righteous king, but due to any sinful deeds done in your previous birth, this famine has occurred in your kingdom. To atone for it and to overcome the sufferings of your subjects, you have to fast on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month.”
The sage further said, “This Ekadashi is going to destroy all sins and fulfill all wishes. This Ekadashi is known as ‘Padma Ekadashi’ or ‘Devshayani Ekadashi’. On this day Lord Vishnu goes to Yoganidra for four months. Worship Lord Vishnu by law and observe this fast.”
King Mandhata revered the sage’s words and returned to his kingdom. He along with his subjects kept the fast of Lord Vishnu on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashada month with full legal practice. The king and his subjects worshiped Lord Vishnu with a sincere heart, fasted all day and awakened the night.
Lord Vishnu was pleased with the influence of the fast. As soon as the fast of Ekadashi was completed, there was torrential rain in the state. The fields became green again, rivers and ponds were filled with full and returned to the prosperity. All the sufferings of the subjects went away and there was happiness and prosperity in the state again. Also Read: When will the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi be observed, what is the importance of this Ekadashi?
