Major accident in Nigeria, 41 people died after boat capsized in the middle of the river
Abuja. At least 41 people died after a boat capsized in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Zamfara on Saturday. 12 others were saved by rescue workers. Suleiman Gummi, the national lawmaker representing Gummi-Bukkuyum constituency in Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives, said on Sunday that the boat was carrying more than 50 passengers and crew. He said the boat capsized in the river near Gummi town in Gummi local government area of Zamfara.
Gummi said that the passengers were farmers who used to go daily by boat to their farms in the nearby area. According to news agency Xinhua, as soon as the information was received, the authorities immediately sent local divers and other employees to the spot. At least a dozen people were rescued alive.
Hassan Daura, head of the Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency, said in an interview with local media that mostly women and children were killed in the incident. Boat capsizing accidents occur frequently in the West African country. These incidents are generally attributed to factors like overloading, adverse weather conditions and operational errors.
