Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema urged for an urgent meeting with Shri Jagdambika Pal to discuss the proposed amendments in the Waqf Act, 2024. Jammu and Kashmir being a Muslim majority state needs to have their concerns heard and thoughtfully addressed

Srinagar November 28, Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), the leading Muslim religious and social organization representing the Muslim community in Jammu and Kashmir, has once again requested Shri Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill. An urgent meeting to discuss the proposed amendments in the Waqf Act, 2024. These amendments have created significant concerns and unease within the community due to their potential impact on religious, social and charitable institutions.

The MMU, led by patron Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has stressed the critical nature of these amendments, which could undermine the autonomy and fundamental purpose of Waqf properties. The organization believes that the proposed changes could have far-reaching effects on the welfare and self-governance of the Muslim community in the region.

In a letter addressed to Mr. Jagadambika Pal, the MMU reiterated the importance of timely talks. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said, “Keeping in mind the seriousness of the situation and its potential impact on the community, we once again request you to give us an opportunity to express our views as soon as possible.” He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir, being a Muslim majority state, needs to have its concerns heard and thoughtfully addressed.

The MMU’s request for the meeting highlights the urgent need for constructive discussions to address the widespread distress and apprehensions among Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir. “We believe that a meeting with your respected self would provide an opportunity for meaningful dialogue rather than unilateral action,” the letter urged.

The MMU is hopeful of a positive response and hopes for an urgent meeting to ensure that the community’s viewpoint is considered in amending the Waqf Act, 2024.
