To deal with the misuse of mobile SIM through fake or fake documents, the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has developed ASTR which is making India’s telecom ecosystem safe, smart and fraud resistant. This is not just technology – it is confidence, transparency and safety in action.
What is ASTR?
The Department of Telecommunications has claimed that ASTR is a tool that is equipped with a solution based on face recognition through Artificial Intelligence. In this, telecom subscribers will be verified through the user’s facial verification. This method will prove to be effective in preventing growing cyber fraud. If someone has issued a SIM card through fake documents, AI will verify the face recognition feature document. The SIM card will be blocked if the document is not verified.
In this way the subscriber database will be checked through this new AI tool. All the fake documents will be used to block the SIM cards. Recently, the Department of Telecommunications said that more than 4.2 crore SIM cards involved in cybercrime have been done. Using these SIM cards, users were cheated through calls or messages. The Department of Telecommunications has examined the numbers reported through the Communication Saathi portal and has done the work of blocking it.
