Gorakhpur AIIMS: A new initiative is being taken for the treatment of mental patients at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) located in Gorakhpur. Patients suffering from severe depression, who have problems like suicidal thoughts, despair and stress, will now be able to be cured through magnetic energy and electric stimulation. For this, Neuro Modulation Unit will soon be established in AIIMS.

The chaotic activities of the brain will be controlled through neuro modulation method. In this technique, the patient’s brain will be activated by giving mild electric shocks and magnetic energy.

Neuromodulation Unit: How does it work?

According to Dr. Manoj Prithviraj, Head of the Department of Psychiatry of AIIMS, in this technique the patient does not suffer any kind of pain or discomfort. Through mild shocks and magnetic stimulation, those parts of the brain which have become inactive due to depression are activated. Due to this the patient experiences mental peace and comfort.

What is Magnetic Stimulation Method?

Symptoms like repeating the same thing or thing again and again, getting scared, suddenly crying in despair come under the category of depression. Under magnetic stimulation, magnetic energy is used in specific areas of the brain, so that the depressed areas can be activated.

ECT therapy will be given in serious cases

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) will be given to seriously mentally ill patients. In this process, first the patient will be given anesthesia and then the brain will be stimulated by giving mild shocks. After therapy, the patient will be monitored for two hours. This process will be done up to three times a week.
