GST Number: GST registration is mandatory for sellers/businesses with annual turnover of Rs 20 lakh or more. No fee is charged by the government in the GST registration process. If the business/seller does not complete the registration process within the deadline, a penalty of 10 percent of the outstanding tax or Rs 10,000 will be imposed. In case of tax evasion, the penalty is up to 100 percent. If a seller or business does business in more than one state, he will have to get separate GST registration for each state.

GST Number (GSTIN) is a 15 digit alphanumeric identification number in which the first two digits represent the state code. The next 10 digits are the PAN card number. If you do not see this number matching then you can understand that there is a discrepancy in the number. Therefore, you should always cross check the GST number with the PAN card number.

To check GSTIN you can visit the official GST portal https://www.gst.gov.in/. There select ‘Search Taxpayer’ to check the GSTIN number. If the GSTIN is correct, you will get its details on the portal. If not found then it is a fake number. PAN card is used here

The PAN card number consists of a 10-number unique code, which is presented in the laminated card. It is issued by the Income Tax Department to those who apply for PAN card. Once the PAN card is ready, all the financial transactions done by that person are linked to the PAN card of the Income Tax Department. In this, all the information from tax payment to credit card transactions goes to the department.
