New Delhi: Authorities in Kashmir have launched investigations into the spread of a deep fake video targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In a case related to the deep fake, Jammu and Kashmir Police have booked a social media user for allegedly sharing the doctored video of Shah on platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to spread fake news.

The accused, identified as Iliyas Mir Magami, is facing charges under the Indian Penal Code for spreading misleading information and creating disharmony among communities. “The intention behind the act was to spread misleading information to create disharmony among communities and different sections of society,” a Police officer investigating the case said.

The officer revealed that the doctored video was shared on his microblogging site, X, with the username @Magamiiliyas. According to the police the video, shared by the user, features a manipulated video of Shah to create a divide between two communities.

Meanwhile, in a separate case in Gujarat, police arrested two individuals for allegedly sharing a deep fake video. One of the accused is a Congress leader and personal assistant to a Member of Legislative Assembly, while the other is a district-level functionary of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell arrested the two persons, identified as Satish Vansola, a resident of Palanpur in Banaskantha and Rakesh Baria from Limkheda town of Dahod district, the police said in a release.

During the investigation, it was found that Vansola has been working closely with Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, while Baria has been serving as the AAP’s Dahod district president.
