In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India’s forces have started ‘Operation Sindoor’ against Pakistan. Under this operation, India had a missile strike on terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and its occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Now the biggest news related to this operation has come out. Terrorist Rauf Azhar has died in the operation vermilion. Rauf Azhar IC-814 Plain Hi Jack, known as Kandahar Plane High Jack, was the mastermind of it.

Know the story of IC-814 Hijack

  • On 24 December 1999, Indian Airlines flight IC-814, which was going from Kathmandu (Nepal) to Delhi, was hijacked by 5 masked militants. The aircraft had 176 passengers and 15 crew members. It is one of the longest and horrific hijack events in Indian history, which lasted for 7 days. Hijackers took the aircraft to Kandahar in Amritsar, Lahore, Dubai, and Afghanistan, where the Taliban ruled at that time.
  • The aircraft flew from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. As soon as the Indian entered the Indian air base, the terrorists captured the cockpit and ordered the pilot to take the aircraft to Kabul at the tip of the gun. Pakistani officials in Lahore allowed landing without permission and fuel was filled. The aircraft then reached Dubai, where the dead body of 27 passengers (women and children) and Roopin Katyal was landed. Katyal was murdered in a clash with the hijackers.
  • The aircraft reached Kandahar on 25 December, where the Taliban mediated. The hijackers made their demands, including the release of 36 terrorists, $ 200 million, and the dead body of the slain terrorist Sajjad Afghani. After a long negotiations, the Government of India decided to release 3 terrorists for the safety of passengers, including Maulana Masood Azhar (founder of Jaish-e-Mohammed), Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar.
  • On 31 December 1999, these terrorists were taken to Kandahar, and in return all the hostages were released. Passengers were brought back to India by special aircraft. Maulana Masood Azhar, the mastermind of Kandahar Hijack, is considered to be lodged in the Indian jail at that time. This hijack was carried out by terrorist organization Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, behind which the role of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI has also been revealed. The main objective of Hijack was to release major terrorists including Masood Azhar.

What was the role of Abdul Rauf Azhar?

Abdul Rauf Azhar was the mastermind of 1999 Kandahar Plane Hijack (IC-814). He was the younger brother of Maulana Masood Azhar, the founder of Jaish-e-Mohammed. Rauf conspired Hijack with Harakat-ul-Mujahideen and ISI to free his brother from Indian jail. He planned an operation in Kathmandu and co-ordinated Hijackers, including his brother Ibrahim Athar. Rauf’s role was to build a strategy and give instructions. He was later active in the Jaish-e-Mohammed terror attacks. He has been a ‘most wanted’ in India.
