New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma left for Australia on Saturday to join the rest of the squad for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Rohit was spotted leaving for his flight at the Mumbai airport on Saturday. The Indian skipper decided to miss the ongoing 1st Test between India and Australia in Perth after the birth of his son earlier this month.

There were speculations surrounding his participation in the series opener in Perth after Rohit was blessed with his second child on November 15. However, it was confirmed earlier this week that the Hitman will stay back in Mumbai to spend some more time with his family before flying to Australia for the ongoing five-match Test series.

In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah is currently leading India in the first Test in Perth and the visitors are in a strong position to win the series opener. Rohit was spotted leaving for Australia from the Mumbai airport on Saturday night. He arrived at the airport with hs wife Ritika, who came to see him off. The Indian skipper also posed for photographs with some fans at the airport.

Earlier, some reports had claimed that the Indian skipper was expected to land in Australia soon and link up with the Indian squad by Day 4 of the ongoing Perth Test. Rohit is expected to lead India in their pink-ball practice match against the Prime Minister’s XI which will be played from November 30 to December 01.

KL Rahul shines in Rohit Sharma’s absence

Rahul replaced Rohit as an opener in the Perth Test and shone at the top in India’s second innings on Saturday. Rahul slammed a brilliant knock of unbeaten 62 and combined with Yashavsi Jaiswal to share an unbeaten stand of 172 runs for the first wicket. Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 90 to help India extend their lead to 218 runs at stumps on Day 2 and take commanding position in the Test match.
