Safest cars available on sale in India, got 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP
Here is a list of the safest cars available in the Indian market that have received a 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP
We have seen in the last few years that almost every vehicle manufacturer has laid a lot of emphasis on the safety of vehicles and the occupants. Active and passive safety have been enhanced by introducing advanced features which include 6-airbags as standard. Cars are being tested across the world by Global NCAP, Euro NCAP, Latin NCAP and the recently launched India NCAP. In this article we are going to tell you about the top Global NCAP cars with the highest safety ratings in India.
1&2. Tata Harrier and Safari
Tata Harrier and Safari were tested by Global NCAP in September 2024. Both the SUVs have achieved the highest 5-star safety rating, also becoming the first made-in-India SUVs to receive the Safe Choice Award from GNCAP. As you know, this designation is awarded to vehicles with the highest level of safety performance.
The Harrier and Safari tested by Global NCAP had premium features like 6-airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Blind Spot Detection. This is why both the SUVs have received 5 star ratings in both adult and child safety.
3. Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon was the first Indian car to be tested under the new and more stringent safety parameters of Global NCAP. Yet it did not disappoint one bit and even improved on its previous score in child safety to achieve the highest 5-star safety rating.
This sub-compact SUV met the pedestrian safety norms by meeting UN127 and GTR9 requirements. It has been ranked the second safest Indian car after the Harrier and Safari in the last 10 years of the GNCAP safety assessment programme. The test unit of Tata Nexon had safety features like 6-airbags, ESC, seat belt reminder and ISOFIX anchors.
4. Hyundai Verna
Last year, the Verna sedan became the first Hyundai car in India to receive the highest 5-star safety rating by Global NCAP. It gets standard safety features like 6-airbags, ESC, rear ISOFIX mount and seat belt reminder for all passengers. Despite receiving a 5-star rating in both adult and child occupant protection, the Hyundai Verna’s body shell was termed as unstable.
5&6. Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia
In April 2023, the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia became the first midsize sedans to receive the highest 5-star safety rating by Global NCAP under the new testing protocol. The overall score of 29.71 out of 34 in adult passenger safety by the Slavia and Virtus was the highest, even better than their SUV counterparts Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. The bodyshell of both the sedans was given a static rating and the inclusion of CRS (Child Restraint System) helped it perform well in child safety.
7. Maruti Suzuki Dezire
Maruti Suzuki has faced a lot of criticism due to lack of safety features in its cars. However, that changed with the recently launched DZire sedan when it scored a 5-star rating in the latest Global NCAP crash test. In this way, this car has become the first Maruti Suzuki car to get 5-star safety rating.
