New Delhi: Serie A match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence on Sunday was abandoned after Fiorentina’s on loan midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed on the field, prompting an immediate medical emergency. The 22-year-old, who joined Fiorentina on loan from AS Roma in August, went down unexpectedly during a stoppage in play for a potential VAR review of a disallowed Lautaro Martínez goal.
Bove appeared to bend down to remove his boot before suddenly collapsing when the game was stopped for the VAR check. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch as players from both teams formed a protective circle around him, shielding him from cameras and spectators. The distressing scene led to an immediate suspension of play as paramedics attended to Bove. Despite initial delays in getting the ambulance onto the field, the midfielder was eventually transported to Careggi Hospital in Florence.

According to early reports from Sky Sport Italia, Bove was breathing independently but had not regained consciousness upon arrival at the hospital. Subsequent updates confirmed that the player had regained consciousness and was responding well to treatment. The quick response from medical personnel and the solidarity shown by both sets of players and fans underscored the gravity of the situation. The disturbing incident was reminiscent of then-Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen’s collapse during the UEFA Euro 2020.

This is the second incident to take place in the league in just this year and eerily enough the first incident also involved a player contracted to AS Roma. In April, Roma defender Evan Ndicka experienced a similar medical emergency during a match against Udinese. These occurrences have reignited discussions about player health and the importance of emergency preparedness in professional football.
The emotional impact of Bove’s collapse was evident as players from both teams, visibly shaken, left the pitch in tears. The referee initially paused the game, and shortly afterward, the decision was made to abandon the match entirely. Fiorentina and Inter Milan supporters showed remarkable unity, urging swift medical assistance and expressing concern for Bove’s well-being.
The match, tied at 0-0 at the time of suspension, will be rescheduled, though an official date has not yet been announced by Serie A authorities. Meanwhile, messages of support for Bove have poured in from across the footballing world, with fans, players, and clubs sending well-wishes for his recovery. This incident has raised awareness about the necessity for prompt medical responses and comprehensive health protocols in football, ensuring that players’ safety remains a top priority on and off the field.
