A taxi driver killed a woman, who was his girlfriend and dumped her body in a forest near Mumbai, police said. The man identified as Nizam Khan has been arrested and has confessed to his crime. The woman worked as a house help and was reported missing on April 18.

Accused Nizam Khan is now in police custody

Mumbai: In a shocking incident reported from Navi Mumbai, a man allegedly strangled his girlfriend to death after a breakup. The Navi Mumbai Police said that the accused Nizam Khan and the woman, Poonam Kshirsagar had a fight in a taxi on the day of the murder. The man wanted to meet the woman for one last time after their breakup, said officials.

Nizam wanted to rekindle the relationship, woman refused: Police

The police said that the man, Nizam, who is a taxi driver, wanted to rekindle his relationship with Poonam. She sat in his taxi in Mankhurd, a suburb in Mumbai and both of them drove out of the city. Nizam offered to keep the relationship intact, but Poonam refused, said police. After this there was a major fight between the couple, according to police.

After the fight, Nizan strangled Poonam to death. He then disposed of the body in the forest, so as to prevent anyone from discovering the murder. He also used a stone to deface the body to hide the identity of the woman, said officials.

The woman was a resident of Nagpada in Mumbai and worked asa domestic help. On April 18 she left for work but did not return home. Her parents called up her employer and were told that she had left their house at her usual time in the evening. The worried parents filed a missing persons complaint at the Mankhurd police station.

Police began investigations and recovered the decomposed body of the woman on April 25 from the Uran coastal area. The body had been stuffed in a gunny bag and was badly decomposed. The police then registered a murder case under Indian Penal Code Section 302 against unknown persons.

The police appealed for an identification of the body and it was then that Poonam’s family approached them. The body was sent for post mortem, and it revealed that the woman had been strangled and drowned.

During their investigations, police discovered that a man named Nizam Khan used to pick up Poonam from Mankhurd and drop her to Nagpada, everyday. Upon questioning, the man told police that after Poonam’s shift ended on April 18 both of them went to Khadavli where she drowned. He claimed that he then took her to a government hospital where she was declared brought dead. The man claimed that after this he panicked and therefore dumped her body in Uran.

Nizam was then handed over to Uran Police. After they questioned him, he confessed to killing Poonam and dumping her body. He also claimed that they had an argument because he suspected that she was having an affair.
