Troubled by the threat of tariffs, Trudeau reached Canada to meet Trump, returned to Canada without any specific assurance.
Ottawa, December 1 (HS). Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hasty meeting with Trump to ease the threat of newly elected US President Donald Trump to impose 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico did not achieve much. They returned to Canada on Saturday without any specific assurances from Trump regarding tariffs.
US President-elect Donald Trump met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Friday. During this, major bilateral issues including trade, tariffs, border security and drug trafficking were discussed.
After the meeting, Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social that his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was very good. Many important issues including trade, illegal migration were discussed. Earlier on Saturday, Trudeau told the media that he and Trump had an excellent conversation. “Thanks for dinner, President Trump,” the Canadian PM posted on Twitter. I look forward to the work we can do together again.
However, during the conversation, Trump did not talk about backing down from the threat of 25 percent tariff. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home on Saturday without any assurances after his meeting with Donald Trump. The special thing is that this visit to Florida was not included in the list of Trudeau’s public programs.
It is noteworthy that Trump announced on Monday that as soon as he takes office, he will impose a 25 percent tariff on all products coming from Canada and Mexico. He said he would keep the tariffs in place until both countries stop the flow of drugs and immigrants from their territories into the US illegally.
