New Delhi: Tension gripped West Bengal’s Murshidabad district after it was rocked by two explosions on two consecutive days — Sunday and Monday — days before the Lok Sabha elections.

The blasts took place in Berhampore Lok Sabha constituency, a Hindustan Times report said. Polling will be held in the constituency in the fourth phase on May 13. Jangipur and Murshidabad will go to polls in the third phase on May 7.

At Jhunka village in Rejinagar, an explosion caused damage to a house on Monday. The blast took place at a garbage dump yard. “Probe is on and there were no casualties. A house was partially damaged,” an officer of Beldanga police station said.

A Congress worker Kamal Pasha reportedly told media persons that the TMC workers had stocked crude bombs near his house which went off. He added his house, including the water tank, a portion of the roof and boundary wall bore the brunt of the blast.

Earlier on Sunday, an explosion was reported at Nazirpur in Rejinagar. On Monday, the cops recovered two drums from the blast site in which socket bombs were hidden. No one has yet been arrested.

Tension during Ram Navami procession

On April 17, the BJP had alleged that stones were pelted and bombs thrown at a Ram Navami procession in the Rejinagar area of the district. The attack allegedly left many devotees critically injured. Security was beefed up and a heavy police force stationed in the area after the incident. Reacting to it, Amit Malviya had tweeted, “Mamata Banerjee is a blot on West Bengal. She failed to provide security for the Ram Navami procession yet again. Hindus were targeted in Rejinagar, Murshidabad. Hindus are a minority in this area. I am pointing out so that Hindus are not blamed for the attacks on themselves.”
