New Delhi: Terrorism is an act of violence that is used to create fear among people to meet political as well as ideological goals. It always leaves a gloomy impact on a large section of society. Terrorist violence has a great influence on society, including trust in government and civil freedoms. The act of terrorism cause people to experience a wide range of negative emotions, including sorrow, fear, anxiety, anger, helplessness and a sense of vulnerability. It takes too long to heal the wounds created by the act of terrorism. Thus, it is important to act against terrorism, and almost all governments across the globe take major initiatives to reduce the acts of terrorism in their respective countries. And the citizens of India annually observe May 21 as National Anti-Terrorism Day. Objective of Anti-Terrorism Day
The main objective of observing Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away youths from terrorism and the cult of violence by shedding light on the suffering of common people and showcasing how terrorism is prejudicial to the national interest. And to achieve the objective of the day, various anti-terrorism activities such as debates, symposia, discussions, lectures, seminars, etc. are organised in schools, colleges and universities. All activities highlight the negative impact of terrorism and violence and motivate youths to be strong pillars against terrorism, promoting peace and harmony.
Various NGOs, social and cultural organisations also schedule their own programmes to showcase the negative impact of terrorism and violence. Moreover, all Government offices, public sector undertakings, and other public institutions take an anti-terrorism/anti-violence pledge on this special day.
Anti-Terrorism Day: An honour to the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi
This annual observation is dedicated to the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on May 21 in an act of terrorism. The killing of the youngest Prime Minister of India was the result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991.
In addition to honouring the prominent leader or the nation, the day is also observed to raise awareness against terrorism and boost steps taken to combat terrorism. The day is an advancement towards boosting national unity and peace.
