What’s going wrong for Puneri Paltan in Pro Kabaddi 2024?
Puneri Paltan won their first PKL title last season by defeating Haryana Steelers in the final.
Defending champions Puneri Paltan have had a mixed run in Pro Kabaddi 2024 (PKL11) before seeing their momentum go downhill as the season progresses. With 13 matches under their belt, the team has secured 6 wins, suffered 4 losses, and managed 3 draws, leaving them in fourth place with 42 points.
Despite a positive point difference of 60, consistency has troubled them in PKL 11, particularly in the crucial moments of matches. The team’s inability to close out tight games, such as their 34–33 loss to Telugu Titans, has raised concerns about their chances of defending the title.
Here are a few reasons that have been the cause of defending champions Puneri Paltan’s downfall.

Lack of proper captaincy in absence of Aslam Inamdar
The sudden loss of Aslam Inamdar has left a gaping hole in Puneri Paltan’s setup in PKL11. The 24-year-old skipper, who led the team to their maiden PKL crown last season, was ruled out after sustaining a knee injury during the match against Telugu Titans on November 9.
Aslam Inamdar’s contributions as an all-rounder and leader were immense, evident in his 38 points across seven matches this season, coupled with an impressive 90.24% not-out rate.
His absence has been deeply felt, particularly in the raiding department. The team now sits at the 10th spot in the list of total raid points with 236 from 13 matches. Aslam not only displayed skill but also inspired his teammates with his presence and leadership. Without him, the team has struggled to maintain the same energy and strategy on the mat, as seen by recent losses, including a 37-23 defeat to Jaipur Pink Panthers.
Poor performance by the defense
While injuries have hurt the raiding department, Puneri Paltan’s defense has also been a glaring weakness. The departure of star Iranian all-rounder Mohammadreza Shadloui, who dominated the tackle charts last season with 99 points, has left the team vulnerable, especially on the left side.
Despite signing defenders like Vishal, Aman, and Mohit, none of them have stepped up as expected. Vishal managed only 12 tackle points last season, while Aman secured 22, and their struggles continue this year.
While Gaurav Khatri has been pretty good for the outfit with 48 tackle points so far this season, it has not helped them to win against teams with prolific raiders. The defense’s inconsistency has allowed opponents to exploit gaps and rack up points. This has proven costly in matches where the Raiders have done their job, only to see the defense falter.
If Puneri Paltan are to make a comeback and advance to the playoffs, their defenders will have to return to form.
