World Children’s Day raises awareness about important issues like education inequality, child labour, and access to healthcare. The day also celebrates children’s potential and empowers them to share their views. It promotes unity and a commitment to creating a safer and fairer world for every child.

New Delhi: The United Nations marks November 20 as World Children’s Day. This day promotes unity worldwide, raises awareness about the issues children face everywhere and aims to improve the well-being of all children. International Children’s Day or World Children’s Day was first announced in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare. Since 1950, many countries celebrate this day on June 1, following a suggestion from the Women’s International Democratic Federation.
World Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20 to recognise the UN General Assembly’s Declaration of the Rights of the Child from November 20, 1959. In some countries, this time is called Children’s Week instead of Children’s Day.
Every year, a theme is set for the day, and this year’s theme is “Listen to the Future”.
World Children’s Day 2024: What is the theme for this year?
The 2024 theme for World Children’s Day is “Listen to the Future”. The United Nations wants everyone to listen to what children hope for, dream about, and envision for the future. It supports children’s right to participate. Children should feel empowered to share their opinions about the world they want. It is the duty to listen to them and help support their ideas.
What does the future hold for the world’s children?
Today’s choices will shape the future of our children. Many children face crises, poverty, and discrimination. Too many are denied the chance to reach their full potential. The future of childhood is uncertain.
This year’s State of the World’s Children Report from UNICEF* looks at the main forces and trends affecting our world today and how they may influence the future.
The report discusses three major trends that will significantly impact children’s lives by 2050: demographic changes, climate and environmental crises, and new technologies.
It also offers three possible future scenarios—ways children might experience the world in 2050, not predictions.
*UNICEF is officially known as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, but it has been called the United Nations Children’s Fund since 1946. This United Nations agency helps children around the world, providing both humanitarian aid and developmental support.
