New Delhi: A 47-year-old man from Iraq suffering from stage-4 rectal cancer has been offered a new lease of life after a complicated surgery performed by doctors in India.

As per reports, the man was diagnosed with piles initially and was undergoing treatment for the same in India. But later with time, it was discovered that he was suffering from rectal cancer which was misdiagnosed as piles previously. The patient was also suffering from obesity and underwent multiple chemotherapies and radiation before being referred to the Manipal Hospitals in Delhi, reported IANS.

As per the report, the senior consultant at the Manipal Hospital, Dr Sanjeev Kumar said that this was one the challenging cases for them as the patient had earlier been misdiagnosed because of his weight. He weighed 122 kg which added more complexity to the treatment.

The doctors discovered that the patient had a peritoneal disease along with rectal cancer stage 4 after multiple examinations.

What is Peritoneal cancer?

Peritoneal disease is a rare type of cancer that develops in a thin layer of tissue that lines the abdomen. This covers the uterus, bladder and rectum. The peritoneum is made of epithelial cells and produces a fluid that helps organs move smoothly inside the abdomen, according to WebMD.

As per reports, usually stage IV cancer is incurable but peritoneal disease can be treated. Peritoneal cancer is not as same as intestinal or stomach cancer. It generally starts in the peritoneum and is called primary peritoneal cancer.

How the cancer was treated?

Given the complexity of the case, doctors decided to undertake CRS (Cytoreductive Surgery) and HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Surgery). These both are highly complicated and challenging procedures.

In the surgery, both procedures were combined with the surgical removal of the cancerous tumour and the administration of heated chemotherapy to the abdomen to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
