New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants signed off the Indian Premier League 2024 edition on a high as they registered a victory against Mumbai Indians in their final match of the event at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir went in vain as MI lost their last game by 18 runs, slipping to the 10th spot in the points table.

The middle-order consisting of Ishan Kishan and skipper Hardik Pandya failed for the Mumbai side and even Nehal Wadhera could not make any impact. While Kishan tried his bit by scoring 14 runs, skipper Hardik was out for 16 while Wadhera could only muster a single run. Romario Shephard remained unbeaten on 1. Dhir stayed on the crease till the end scoring an unbeaten 62 off just 28 balls but it was not enough to help MI win.

For the Super Giants, Ravi Bishnoi and Naveen-ul-Haq picked two wickets each while Mohsin Khan and Krunal Pandya also scalped a wicket each. Matt Henry and Arshad Khan remained wicketless.

Rohit’s knock in vain

In his last appearance on the cricket field before the showpiece T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma certainly made an impact with a remarkable knock but unfortunately, could not help MI cross the fence. The Hitman got to his fifty in just 28 balls, smashing the Super Giants bowlers for fours and sixes before departing for a well-made score of 68 runs off just 38 deliveries. His innings was studded with 10 boundaries and three maximums as he danced down the ground and smashed powerful shots.

Rahul, Pooran weave magic for LSG

Earlier, LSG skipper KL Rahul and West Indian Nicholas Pooran stitched a massive partnership of 109 runs as the Super Giants  scored a massive 214 for 6 in their last IPL match. Rahul (55 off 41 balls) first steadied the innings with Marucs Stoinis (28) after the fall of his opening partner Devdutt Padikkal for a duck and then stitched a century stand with Pooran, who smashed a 29-ball 75 studded with eight maximums and five boundaries.

For MI, spinner Piyush Chawla (3/29) and Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thusara (3/28) emerged as the most successful bowlers, grabbing three wickets each. Arjun Tendulkar, who was inducted in the playing eleven with premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah being rested ahead of T20 World Cup, bowled 2.2 overs and conceded 22 runs without taking a wicket. Meanwhile, MI were the first team to get eliminated from the race to playoffs.
