Pandharpur Wari 2025: Why Pandharpur fair is held: Pandharpur Mela, also known as Pandharpur Vari, is the largest and most important annual pilgrimage festival in Maharashtra. This fair is mainly due to the unwavering reverence and love of the devotees towards Lord Vithoba i.e. Lord Krishna. It is a month-e-paddal journey that is done every year by a devotee of Lord Vithoba from different parts of Maharashtra. 1. One of the largest walking pilgrimage in the world: Pandharpur Wari is considered one of the largest and oldest organized walking pilgrims in the world. It involves more than 1 million people every year.
2. Palki tradition: The main attraction of this journey is the adorned palanquins of different saints, in which the saints have footpaths/ stands. The most prominent palanquins are Saint Dnyaneshwar from Aandi and Sant Tukaram from Dehu.
3. Unique devotional music: Throughout the journey, Varakari continues to sing ‘Gyanaba Tukaram’, ‘Pundalik Varada Hari Vitthal’ and ‘Jai Jai Ram Krishna Hari’ as well as singing the desire/ devotional songs and bhajans composed by saints.
4. Chandrabhaga form of river: Pandharpur is situated on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River. This river is also known as the Bhima River, but it is called Chandrabhaga due to its size to be a semi -semi -semi -semi -semi -grade near Pandharpur. Devotees take a holy bath here.
5. The formless form of Vithoba: The idol of Lord Vithoba is in a straight standing posture, in which his hands are placed on the waist and they are standing on a brick. This reflects his waiting and his spontaneous availability towards devotees. This form also symbolizes that God is accessible to all and they are present everywhere. This fair is an integral part of the cultural and spiritual identity of Maharashtra, which reflects the confluence of devotion, community and tradition.
