Kolkata: In a shocking incident in Kolkata, a woman named Sanghati Paul stabbed her live-in partner to death. The victim, Sarthak Das, was found in their rented apartment in the Dumdum area, lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. The incident occurred on Wednesday (February 28) and Sanghati Paul informed the police about the crime. Sarthak Das, a photographer, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead.

According to police, Sanghati Paul confessed to the crime during interrogation. Anupam Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South Zone, Barrackpore, said, “We arrested the woman and seized the murder weapon. She confessed to the crime.”

Murder in a fit of rage?

The couple, both in their thirties, had been living together for nearly one-and-a-half years. They shared the apartment with Sanghati Paul’s young son from her previous marriage. Neighbours stated that the couple often had arguments.

According to India Today reports, the incident fuelled when Sarthak Das returned home intoxicated from a pre-wedding photo session. An official from the Nagerbazar Police Station said, “The two had an argument. Paul, in a fit of rage, stabbed Das with a knife.”

Motive behind murder

The motive behind the murder is still unclear, and investigations are ongoing. It remains uncertain whether Sanghati Paul’s son witnessed the tragic event. On the night of the incident, the boy was sent to his grandparents’ house due to being in a state of shock.

Sarthak Das, besides his profession as a photographer, also worked as an app-cab driver. The couple had initially met on a social networking site a few years ago and had been living together since then.

The police have registered a case and Sarthak Das’s body has been sent for postmortem.
