New Delhi: In recent years, flights have become more affordable to the common people of India than in earlier times due to the improvement in the economic condition of the country. The Indira Gandhi International Airport serves Delhi and the National Capital Region. It covers 5,106 acres in Palam and since 2009, it is the busiest airport in India in terms of passenger traffic. Also, it is the country’s busiest airport when it comes to cargo traffic and is the world’s second-busiest airport in terms of seating capacity.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is an international airport and also serves the Mumbai Metropolitan Region apart from the financial capital. It is the country’s second-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic. Notably, in 2022, it was Asia’s 14th busiest airport and the world’s 28th busiest airport by passenger traffic.

Kempegowda International Airport

Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru covers a total area of 4,000 acres and is located about 35 kilometres north of the capital of Karnataka. Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), a public-private consortium owns and operates it. Opened in May 2008, it is the third-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic, air traffic movements and domestic and total cargo handled in the country.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport serves Telangana’s capital Hyderabad. Opened on March 23, 2008, the airport covers an area of 5,500 acres and is India’s largest airport in terms of area. It was the first Indian airport to launch a domestic e-boarding facility in 2015 and an international e-boarding facility in 2020 and is also the first greenfield airport in the country.

Chennai International Airport

As the name suggests, the Chennai International Airport serves Chennai and is India’s fifth busiest airport. Also, it is the third busiest airport in terms of international traffic. In 2018, it was Asia’s 49th busiest airport and it handled over 18 million passengers in 2022-2023.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport serves Kolkata and covers an area of 6.64 square kilometres. It is the largest hub for air traffic in the eastern part of the country and is the primary aviation hub for eastern and northeastern India. Also known as Kolkata Airport and Dum Dum Airport, it was opened in 1924 and is one of the oldest airports in the country.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport serves Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. It is the largest and busiest airport in Gujarat and is India’s seventh busiest airport. In fiscal year 2022-23, the airport handled over 10 million passengers.
