New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has filed a petition to the Insolvency Tribunal NCLT claiming dues of Rs 158 crore from Byjus. NCLT, a government body that deals with corporate disputes, has issued a notice to Think & Learn Pvt Ltd, the parent company that operates Byjus. Byjus is an online learning platform that was the Indian cricket team’s sponsor from 2019 to 2023.

As per a report in PTI, BCCI has filed a plea, seeking dues of Rs 158 crore, excluding GST as an operational creditor under section 9 of the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code 2016. Taking cognizance of BCCI’s plea, a two-member bench of the NCLT issued a notice to Think & Learn Pvt Ltd on November 28, giving the two weeks to respond in the matter.

During the hearing, BCCI’s counsel informed the two-member bench of the NCLT that a general notice was served to Byjus via an email on January 06 this year, reminding them of the default payment of Rs 158 crore. However, there was no response from the company. Byjus had become India’s team sponsor after the Chinese mobile manufacturer Oppo terminated their contract with the BCCI.

Byjus’ contract came to an end earlier this year following which the BCCI signed a sponsorship deal with Dream11 to become their lead jersey sponsor. The firm that runs a fantasy gaming platform was also the main sponsor during the recently concluded 2023 ODI World Cup.

India to tour South Africa next

Talking about the Indian team, the Men in Blue will be heading to South Africa later this month for a full-fledged tour consisting of three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches. The three-match T20I series will get underway on December 10 with the first game in Kingsmead, Durban. The ODI series will kick off on December 17 followed by two Test matches from December 26.

While Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead India in T20Is in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul will be in charge of the ODI team. Rohit will return to lead India in the final two Test matches.
